As you can see from the picture, The HERMIT is in 3 distinct sections and not built as one huge unit. I did this for portability and storage. It was easier for me to build and transport the HERMIT this way. The 3 basic sections are the HLT on the left, the Mash Tun Stand in the center, and the Boil Kettle on the right. Having the HERMIT in discrete sections allows me to disassemble, clean, and put away sections of the system while I am still brewing. For example, once the Kettle is filled, the HLT and Mash Tun Stand are no longer needed, so while the Kettle is coming to a boil I can clean and put away the other components. This helps to shorten the brew day somewhat. Give the modular approach some serious thought in the design of your brewery. The other major consideration is plumbing. Definitely look at the Plumbing and More Plumbing sections to see the advantages of Quick Disconnects and other cool alternatives to those wretched barb fittings. |
